Computing

Computing

Curriculum intent

Computers themselves, and software yet to be developed, will revolutionize the way we learn.”- Steve Jobs

At Streatham Wells, we see Computing as a core subject , which intends to develop ‘thinkers of the future’ through a modern, ambitious and relevant education. We want to equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity that will enable them to become active participants in the digital world. It is important to us that the children understand how to use the ever-changing technology to express themselves, as tools for learning and as a means to drive their generation forward into the future.

Whilst ensuring they understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with online experiences, we want children to develop as respectful, responsible and confident users of technology, aware of measures that can be taken to keep themselves and others safe online.

Our aim is to provide a computing curriculum that is designed to balance acquiring a broad and deep knowledge alongside opportunities to apply skills in various digital contexts. Beyond teaching computing discreetly, we will give pupils the opportunity to apply and develop what they have learnt across wider learning in the curriculum.

We have a number of high quality Computing resources, such as:

  • a class set of laptops
  • Chromebooks
  • ipads
  • micro-bits
  • bluetooth headphones

E-Safety and Digital Citizenship

A key part of implementing our computing curriculum is ensuring our students' safety. We take online safety seriously and seek to teach children the skills they need to stay safe online.

Children develop online resilience by using the Education for a Connected World framework which intends to promote and broaden the provision of online safety education so that it is empowering, builds resilience, and affects positive culture change.

How you can help at home

There are lots of ways to help your child develop at computing at home. The easiest way is to simply let them use a computer to publish or produce things (letters, newsletters, films, podcasts or pieces of art). It's particularly helpful if you can then get them to 'teach' you how to do things as this supports their understanding of what they have done and develops their technical vocabulary.

You can also use coding apps such as Scratch which are free to use.

Being computer literate is extremely important. Children at Streatham Wells are passionate about Computing, and have a number of opportunities to further develop their computational thinking such as:

  • Coding Club
  • First-hand experiences such as visiting the Science Museum
  • Digital Leaders - we have Digital Leaders in Year 6 who help lead e-safety for the pupil community and have a voice in Computing at and beyond Streatham Wells
