Curriculum intent
At Streatham Wells, we believe that in order for children to embrace thechallenges of creating happy and successful adult lives, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Our high quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of PSHE helps pupils develop resilience, and to know how and when to ask for help. Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is taught weekly and is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Streatham Wells Primary School’s programme of study for PSHE aims to prepare children for life in modern Britain through 6 key strands:
- Mental Health
- Respect to all
- Citizenship
- Relationships
- Goals and Dreams
- RSHE
Children are offered weekly opportunities to discuss issues and concepts. Our PSHE curriculum is woven into our behaviour policy and our wellbeing lessons.
How you can help at home
Talking to your child about how they feel and how they can manage feelings is really helpful-- you could encourage them to keep a journal or diary. It's also great to talk about the changes that will take place as they get older. Lastly talking about what it means to be a good citizen is really important as that may be different from family to family.
Beyond the classroom
Children at Streatham Wells Primary have ample opportunities to develop in PSHE outside the classroom such as:
- Bikeability - children learn how to be safe on the road on their bikes
- TFL Stars - we are part of the TFL travel safe programme
- Celebrations of national weeks such as Anti-Bullying Week, Road Safety Week, Disability History Month, LGBT History Month, Black History Month, E-Safety Week, Children's Mental Health Week
- We raise money for charities such as Comic Relief and Show Racism the Red Card
- We give pupils opportunities for pupil leadership such as: Head and Deputy Pupils, Year 6 Subject Leaders, School Council, Digital Leaders and many more!
