Curriculum intent

"What is mathematics? It is only a systematic effort of solving puzzles posed by nature."— Shakuntala Devi

At Streatham Wells, we aim for our children to communicate mathematically and recognise that it is a tool for life and therefore leave the school with high standards of numeracy. We equip them with strong, unshakeable mathematical structures in their minds which they can use as a springboard to propel them into deeper mathematical problem solving. We believe that children will be most successful at Mathematics when they enjoy what they are doing, when they are motivated to achieve or excel, when they experience success and understand how their work is relevant. We teach according to mastery principles and pedagogy, using a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach. With an emphasis on problem solving, children are taught to visualise, to make connections and to communicate their understanding both verbally and in written form. By adopting a Mastery approach, it is also intended that all children, regardless of their starting point, will maximize their academic achievement.

We teach this through the White Rose Maths scheme of work. This is a pioneering educational initiative that emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of mathematics. It's a pedagogical approach that has been embraced by both primary and secondary schools to enhance maths skills and problem-solving skills.

How you can help at home:

Parents can help their children at home with their maths by creating a supportive and encouraging environment, practicing math concepts together, and finding real-world examples to help reinforce maths skills. Children have access to Times Table Rockstars from Year 2 to practice their times tables to fluency.

Children at Streatham Wells achieve highly in maths, and we offer children a range of opportunities outside the classroom to further develop their Maths, such as:

  • Taking part in competitions such as Money-wise challenge
  • Links with the Royal Institute - children take part in a Saturaday school at the Royal Institute to further stretch and challenge their maths skills
  • Links with the Ogden Trust - bringing together Maths and Science to challenge children's thinking
