Music

Curriculum intent

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." Plato

At Streatham Wells, we believe music is a powerful language which connects children to themselves and others. It transcends different cultures, abilities and generations – stimulating responses on both emotional and intellectual levels. It allows opportunity for personal expression and plays an important part in the personal development of an individual. We provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that ensures the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills. Music lessons are carefully planned and delivered in order to foster a school-wide love and enthusiasm for the subject; this will be evident in children’s ability to discuss and appraise music from different genres using the interrelated dimensions of music.

We have specialist teachers for Music teaching from Lambeth Music Service and from Kinetika Bloco.

Throughout their time at Streatham Wells, children have the opportunity to learn lots of different tuned and untuned instruments such as:

  • Percussion: djembe drums, samba drums, glockenspiel
  • Woodwind: recorder, flute
  • Brass: trumpet, trombone, euphonium

Children have many opportunities throughout the academic year to perform and appraise performances to a number of different audiences.

How you can help at home

There are lots of ways you can support your child’s musical life at home; there are many concerts and performances in the borough and beyond – you might take a look at https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/families?type=family-young-people to see what events could be enjoyable for the family. Listening to a range of music will help cultivate your child’s awareness and build on the understanding from lessons. You can always explore what the Lambeth Music Hub has to offer to enrich your child’s musical life https://www.lambethmusic.co.uk/
